Drone work is becoming a valuable career skill across construction, real estate, inspections, media, agriculture, public safety and more. But professional value comes from knowing how to plan and conduct a safe, legal operation – not simply knowing how to make a drone take off.
The person who owns the drone is not always the person ready to do the job
Drones have moved far beyond novelty. They are now working tools used to document construction progress, photograph homes and commercial properties, inspect roofs and infrastructure, capture marketing content, map land, support public-safety operations and gather information from places that are difficult or dangerous to reach.
That creates an opportunity for people in many different careers. A construction professional can add aerial progress documentation to a project. A real estate photographer can offer a more complete visual package. A marketer or filmmaker can add a new production capability. An entrepreneur can build a specialized service around inspections, mapping or aerial imaging.
But there is an important difference between owning a drone and being prepared to operate one professionally. Employers and clients need someone who understands the assignment, the aircraft, the rules and the airspace around the job site. That is what turns drone flying into a career skill.
Commercial drone work comes with real responsibility
When a drone is used for work or business under the FAA’s Small UAS Rule, the operation falls under Part 107. The person acting as remote pilot in command must hold an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate, and the FAA says that certificate demonstrates knowledge of the regulations, operating requirements and procedures for safely flying drones. The knowledge behind the certificate matters just as much as the credential itself. A professional operator must be able to evaluate weather, read a sectional chart, recognize airspace boundaries, understand operating limitations, make sound decisions and know when an authorization or waiver may be required.
For flights in controlled airspace near airports, drone pilots must receive FAA airspace authorization before operating. Depending on the location and requested altitude, that authorization may be available through the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, commonly called LAANC, or through FAA DroneZone. In the Twin Cities, understanding airspace is part of the job
The Twin Cities is an active aviation environment. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport anchors a large area of controlled airspace, while airports including Flying Cloud, Crystal, St. Paul Downtown and Anoka County-Blaine add layers of local aircraft activity and operational considerations.
A job site may look open and uncomplicated from the ground while sitting under controlled airspace or near an airport traffic pattern. A professional drone pilot needs to know how to identify that airspace, determine what authorization is required, review altitude limitations and plan the flight without creating a hazard for crewed aircraft or people on the ground.
That is why professional drone education should include aviation fundamentals. Flying skill is important, but safe and employable operators also need the judgment to answer a more consequential question: Should this flight happen here, at this time, under these conditions?
Certification and insurance are different – and both can matter
FAA Part 107 certification establishes the regulatory foundation for professional drone operations. Insurance addresses the financial risk of those operations. The FAA does not universally require drone liability insurance, and earning a Remote Pilot Certificate does not automatically provide coverage.
However, many employers, clients, property owners and project contracts require operators to provide proof of commercial drone insurance before work begins. Construction companies, real estate firms and other organizations may also require specific liability limits or ask to be named as an additional insured.
For someone hoping to use drones professionally, compliance is therefore more than passing an exam. It means building repeatable habits around planning, authorization, documentation, safety and risk management. Those habits make the skill more useful to an employer and more credible to a client.
